On February 7th and 8th the new Competitive Unit Suriname hosted a two-day forum to start general awareness on the need for a competitive mindset.

The last International Competitive Index leaves much room for improvement for our country. The Government of Suriname dedicated itself towards supporting a competitive business climate. This kick-of seminar on competitiveness needs to be the catalyst for a more aware business environment.

Governor Gillmore Hoefdraad of the Central Bank of Suriname was the first keynote speaker and explained where Suriname is today and its small and medium enterprises.
One of the main points the Governor made is that small and medium entrepreneurs often lack access to credit at the regular financial institutes. The Central Bank is working towards more accessible credits for this target group by implementing several actions, for example:

  • Indirect monetary policy instruments
  • Set up of a credit bureau
  • Supporting accounting expertise
  • Set up of a Lending Fund to SME’s in cooperation with the IDB

Moreover the Central Bank is working towards a more competitive business climate by promoting privatization and deregulation and support public-private partnership initiatives.
